Synopsis
An Admiralty operations director coordinates the Royal Navy's desperate hunt for the German battleship Bismarck after it sinks HMS Hood. The film follows the fleet-wide chase across the North Atlantic to the ship's final destruction.
Historical Context
The Bismarck sank HMS Hood on 24 May 1941, prompting a massive Royal Navy manhunt. Crippled by torpedo bombers from HMS Ark Royal, Bismarck was sunk on 27 May 1941 with the loss of over 2,000 German sailors.
Historical Accuracy
The film is broadly accurate on the operational chase, drawing on C.S. Forester's account, though it dramatizes command-room tension for pacing.
