Synopsis

Survivors clinging to a life raft recall, in flashback, their lives and service aboard the destroyer HMS Torrin before she is sunk off Crete. The film weaves together the perspectives of officers and enlisted men alongside their families at home.

Historical Context

The film was based on the real sinking of HMS Kelly, commanded by Lord Louis Mountbatten, during the Battle of Crete in May 1941, when German air power devastated the Royal Navy's Mediterranean Fleet.

Historical Accuracy

Mountbatten advised on production and the ship's fate closely mirrors HMS Kelly's loss, though character details are fictionalized.
