Synopsis
The personal and romantic entanglements of soldiers stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii unfold in the tense months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Personal conflicts of pride, love, and military bureaucracy are suddenly overtaken by the events of 7 December 1941.
Historical Context
The film is set among the peacetime US Army garrison in Hawaii in 1941, capturing the routine military life that was abruptly shattered by the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Historical Accuracy
Based on James Jones's novel drawn from his own prewar Army service; the attack itself is depicted briefly and the personal drama is fictional.
The Real Battle
A carrier strike force attacked the United States Pacific Fleet at anchor, bringing America into the war.
Two waves of aircraft from six carriers sank or disabled eight battleships and destroyed much of the island's air strength. The American carriers were at sea, and the fuel storage and repair facilities were left largely intact.
