Synopsis
German army officer Claus von Stauffenberg leads a conspiracy of high-ranking officials to assassinate Adolf Hitler and seize control of the government using the Operation Valkyrie contingency plan. When the bomb fails to kill Hitler, the plotters scramble to execute their coup before the plot unravels.
Historical Context
The 20 July plot was the most significant of several attempts by German military officers to assassinate Hitler and end the war; Stauffenberg planted a bomb at the Wolf's Lair headquarters, but Hitler survived, and the conspirators were swiftly arrested and executed. The plot exposed deep divisions within the German military over the regime's conduct of the war.
Historical Accuracy
The film follows the documented sequence of the plot closely, though it condenses some events and simplifies the conspirators' motivations.
