Synopsis
A young Home Army courier falls in love amid the chaos of the Warsaw Uprising as the city descends into ruin around him. The film follows a group of youthful insurgents through the uprising's fleeting triumphs and eventual devastating collapse. Its visceral, kinetic style aims to convey the uprising to a modern audience.
Historical Context
The 1944 Warsaw Uprising was a 63-day insurrection by the Polish underground Home Army against German occupation, launched partly in hopes of liberating the city before the advancing Red Army arrived. Soviet forces halted outside the city, and the uprising was brutally crushed, with over 150,000 Polish civilians killed and Warsaw largely leveled in reprisal.
Historical Accuracy
The film prioritizes visceral, MTV-style visual energy over strict chronological accuracy, drawing some criticism from historians for its stylization.
The Real Battle
Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, joined by the Soviet Union on 17 September. Britain and France declared war on Germany two days after the invasion began.
The Westerplatte depot near Danzig held out for seven days against overwhelming odds and became a national symbol. Warsaw was besieged and surrendered on 28 September; the last regular units capitulated in early October.
