Synopsis

A gentle, artistic young woman moves to the naval town of Kure to marry into an unfamiliar family, adapting to wartime rationing and social pressures with quiet resilience. As American air raids intensify, she loses loved ones and part of her own body to a bomb blast. The story ends amid the atomic bombing of nearby Hiroshima and Japan's surrender.

Historical Context

The port city of Kure, near Hiroshima, was a major Imperial Japanese Navy base and a target of Allied bombing raids throughout 1945, with civilians enduring escalating shortages and destruction as the war neared its end. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, is depicted at a distance, reflecting the everyday civilian experience of the war's cataclysmic finale.

Historical Accuracy

Based on a acclaimed manga by Fumiyo Kōno that drew on extensive historical research into daily wartime life in Kure, the film is praised for its meticulous period detail.

The Real Battle

Two atomic bombings and the Soviet declaration of war led to Japan's acceptance of the Potsdam terms and the end of the Second World War.

Hiroshima was bombed on 6 August and Nagasaki on 9 August, as Soviet forces invaded Manchuria. After a divided cabinet and an attempted coup by army officers on the night of 14–15 August, the Emperor's recorded broadcast was aired on 15 August. The instrument of surrender was signed aboard USS Missouri on 2 September.
