Synopsis

Jewish residents of the Warsaw Ghetto organize an armed resistance movement as German forces move to liquidate the ghetto and deport its remaining inhabitants to death camps. Despite being vastly outgunned, the fighters hold out for nearly a month against SS troops.

Historical Context

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was the largest single act of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust, launched as German forces attempted final deportations to Treblinka. Though ultimately crushed with the ghetto razed, it became an enduring symbol of resistance against genocide.

Historical Accuracy

The television film dramatizes real historical figures such as Mordechai Anielewicz while compressing the uprising's events for runtime.

The Real Battle

Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, joined by the Soviet Union on 17 September. Britain and France declared war on Germany two days after the invasion began.

The Westerplatte depot near Danzig held out for seven days against overwhelming odds and became a national symbol. Warsaw was besieged and surrendered on 28 September; the last regular units capitulated in early October.
