Synopsis
A Finnish infantry company fights alongside German forces against the Soviet Union in the Continuation War, from the initial advance to the grinding defensive retreat of 1944. The film follows a diverse group of soldiers through years of brutal combat, comradeship, and loss.
Historical Context
Finland fought the Continuation War from 1941 to 1944 alongside Germany against the Soviet Union, seeking to reclaim territory lost in the Winter War, before an armistice ended hostilities in September 1944.
Historical Accuracy
Based on Väinö Linna's classic 1954 novel drawn from his own wartime experience, considered a foundational and largely faithful depiction of Finnish frontline service.
The Real Battle
The Soviet Union invaded Finland after Finland refused territorial demands. Finnish forces, far smaller and heavily outnumbered, inflicted severe losses before being ground down.
Fighting centred on the Mannerheim Line and the forests around Suomussalmi, where Finnish ski troops destroyed encircled Soviet columns. The Moscow Peace Treaty ceded roughly a tenth of Finnish territory.
