Synopsis
A young Finnish lieutenant leads his platoon deep into Soviet-held Karelian territory during Finland's Continuation War offensive, encountering Soviet ambushes, wartime romance, and the personal toll of prolonged campaigning. The film balances intense forest combat with a love story back on the home front.
Historical Context
The Continuation War (1941–1944) saw Finland, allied loosely with Germany, attempt to reclaim territory lost to the Soviet Union in the Winter War, advancing into eastern Karelia before the front stabilized and eventually reversed.
Historical Accuracy
The unit and characters are fictional, though the depicted advance into Karelia reflects real Finnish operations of 1941.
The Real Battle
The Soviet Union invaded Finland after Finland refused territorial demands. Finnish forces, far smaller and heavily outnumbered, inflicted severe losses before being ground down.
Fighting centred on the Mannerheim Line and the forests around Suomussalmi, where Finnish ski troops destroyed encircled Soviet columns. The Moscow Peace Treaty ceded roughly a tenth of Finnish territory.
