Synopsis
Two childhood friends turned Army Air Corps pilots and the nurse they both love are caught up in the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The film follows their romance through the devastating attack and their later participation in the retaliatory Doolittle Raid on Japan.
Historical Context
The 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor drew the United States into World War II; the Doolittle Raid of April 1942 was a symbolic American bombing raid on Tokyo launched from an aircraft carrier in retaliation.
Historical Accuracy
The central love triangle is fictional and the film has been criticized for historical inaccuracies and dramatic license, though the attack sequence draws on real events and locations.
The Real Battle
A carrier strike force attacked the United States Pacific Fleet at anchor, bringing America into the war.
Two waves of aircraft from six carriers sank or disabled eight battleships and destroyed much of the island's air strength. The American carriers were at sea, and the fuel storage and repair facilities were left largely intact.
