Synopsis

As Shanghai falls to Japanese forces in 1937, a group of Chinese soldiers barricades itself inside the Sihang Warehouse, fighting a symbolic last stand watched by civilians across the river. Their defiance becomes a rallying point for a nation on the brink of collapse.

Historical Context

The Battle of Shanghai was one of the largest and bloodiest engagements of the early Second Sino-Japanese War. The defense of the Sihang Warehouse by a small Chinese garrison, later mythologized as the '800 heroes' (though the actual number was closer to 400), was staged partly for its propaganda value to the international community watching from the Shanghai International Settlement across Suzhou Creek.

Historical Accuracy

The film compresses and dramatizes events and adds fictional characters, but the warehouse siege itself and its public visibility across the creek are historically grounded.

The Real Battle

After the fall of Shanghai, Japanese forces advanced up the Yangtze and captured the Chinese capital, following it with weeks of mass killing and rape of civilians and disarmed soldiers.

Chinese defences collapsed on 12–13 December 1937. A small group of Western residents established the Nanjing Safety Zone, which sheltered a substantial part of the remaining civilian population. Estimates of the dead vary widely between Chinese, Japanese and Western scholarship.
