Synopsis

General Tadamichi Kuribayashi commands the doomed Japanese garrison defending Iwo Jima, employing unconventional tactics from an elaborate network of tunnels and caves. The film follows him and a conscripted young baker as they face an overwhelming American assault knowing the battle cannot be won. It offers a humanizing companion piece to Flags of Our Fathers, told from the Japanese perspective.

Historical Context

General Kuribayashi organized the island's defense around fortified tunnel networks rather than beachhead resistance, prolonging the battle and inflicting heavy American casualties before nearly all of the roughly 21,000 Japanese defenders died in the fighting. His personal letters, on which the film partly draws, offer rare insight into a Japanese commander's private thoughts.

Historical Accuracy

The film is based substantially on Kuribayashi's actual letters and is praised by historians for its balanced, research-grounded portrayal of Japanese soldiers rarely humanized in Western war films.

The Real Battle

Marines assaulted an eight-square-mile volcanic island defended from a dense network of tunnels and bunkers.

Kuribayashi abandoned defence at the waterline in favour of fighting from underground positions inland. The flag raising on Mount Suribachi on 23 February produced one of the war's defining photographs while a month of fighting still lay ahead.
