Synopsis
This ten-part miniseries follows three U.S. Marines—Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge, and John Basilone—through the brutal Pacific campaigns from Guadalcanal to Peleliu and Okinawa. It portrays the physical and psychological toll of jungle and island warfare against Japan. The narrative draws on memoirs to depict combat with unflinching realism.
Historical Context
The Pacific War's island-hopping campaign involved a series of costly amphibious assaults by U.S. forces against fortified Japanese island garrisons, including Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, from 1942 to 1945.
Historical Accuracy
Based on the memoirs of Eugene Sledge and Robert Leckie and on research into John Basilone, generally regarded as historically rigorous with high production accuracy.
The Real Battle
The first American ground offensive of the Pacific war, fought over a single airfield and the sea lanes that supplied it.
Marines seized the airfield — renamed Henderson Field — and held it through months of night attacks, naval battles and disease. Japan evacuated its surviving troops in February 1943.
