Synopsis
A French soldier trapped on the beaches near Dunkirk during the 1940 evacuation navigates chaos, black-market opportunism, and a fleeting romance while trying to secure passage to England before German forces overrun the coast. The film offers a more cynical, ground-level French perspective on the disaster.
Historical Context
The Dunkirk evacuation of late May and early June 1940 rescued over 330,000 British and French troops from the beaches as German forces advanced, though many French soldiers were left behind or captured after covering the retreat.
Historical Accuracy
The film is based on a semi-autobiographical novel and focuses on individual, often unheroic, survival rather than a comprehensive account of the evacuation.
The Real Battle
With the British Expeditionary Force and French units cut off against the Channel, the Royal Navy and hundreds of civilian craft lifted the trapped armies off the beaches and mole at Dunkirk.
A German halt order and stubborn rearguard actions at Calais and along the Lys bought time. Over nine days roughly 338,000 British and Allied troops were evacuated, though nearly all heavy equipment was abandoned.
