Synopsis
Three intertwined stories follow a Dutch collaborator's son, a Canadian glider pilot, and a Zeeland resistance member during the brutal fight to clear German forces from the Scheldt estuary. Their paths converge amid flooded polders and fierce fighting for the vital port access to Antwerp. The film humanizes the lesser-known campaign through personal moral choices.
Historical Context
The Battle of the Scheldt was fought by Canadian, British, Polish, and Dutch forces to clear German defenses blocking the approach to Antwerp's harbor, essential for Allied supply lines. The flooded terrain of Walcheren and South Beveland made the fighting exceptionally difficult. Its completion in November 1944 finally allowed Allied logistics to flow through Antwerp.
Historical Accuracy
The film combines fictional composite characters with well-researched depictions of the flooding, landing craft assaults, and Dutch civilian experience.
