Synopsis
Two former Oxford friends, one a British civil servant and the other a disillusioned German diplomat, find themselves on opposite sides during the 1938 Munich Conference, where Britain, France, Germany, and Italy negotiate the fate of Czechoslovakia. As Neville Chamberlain seeks peace, the pair try to smuggle evidence of Hitler's true intentions.
Historical Context
The Munich Agreement of September 1938 allowed Nazi Germany to annex the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia in exchange for a promise of no further territorial demands, a policy of appeasement pursued by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain that failed to prevent further German expansion.
Historical Accuracy
The two central protagonists are fictional inventions used to dramatize real diplomatic events; Chamberlain and other historical figures are depicted engaging in real documented negotiations.
