Synopsis

During the Battle of Stalingrad, Soviet sniper Vasily Zaitsev becomes a celebrated symbol of resistance after his kills are publicized by a political officer. The Germans dispatch an elite sniper, Erwin König, to hunt him down, leading to a tense cat-and-mouse duel amid the ruined city. A romantic subplot unfolds alongside the deadly rivalry.

Historical Context

Vasily Zaitsev was a real Soviet sniper credited with numerous kills during the Battle of Stalingrad and became a celebrated Soviet propaganda hero; the existence and identity of his German sniper rival König is historically disputed and possibly apocryphal.

Historical Accuracy

The Zaitsev-König duel is likely more legend than documented fact, and the romantic plot is fictional; the broader siege depiction is dramatized.

The Real Battle

Urban fighting of unprecedented intensity ended with the encirclement and destruction of the German Sixth Army.

The Sixth Army fought house by house to the Volga. On 19 November Operation Uranus struck the weaker Romanian flanks and closed a ring around some 250,000 men. Paulus surrendered on 2 February 1943.
