Synopsis

An ensemble drama chronicling the ambitious and ultimately failed Allied attempt to seize a string of bridges through the Netherlands and outflank German defenses. British paratroopers at Arnhem find themselves isolated and overwhelmed as the operation unravels. The film follows commanders and soldiers across multiple nations as the plan collapses under poor intelligence and stiff resistance.

Historical Context

Operation Market Garden was conceived by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery as a bold thrust to end the war by Christmas 1944. Airborne troops seized several bridges but the final bridge at Arnhem proved a bridge too far, as British forces met unexpectedly strong German armor. The operation's failure prolonged the war into 1945.

Historical Accuracy

Based closely on Cornelius Ryan's history, the film is broadly accurate though it compresses timelines and simplifies some command decisions for dramatic clarity.

The Real Battle

The largest amphibious operation in history put Allied armies ashore on five beaches in Normandy, opening the campaign that would liberate Western Europe.

Airborne divisions landed behind the beaches overnight to secure flanks and causeways. Seaborne assaults hit Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword from first light; Omaha was very nearly held. By nightfall roughly 156,000 men were ashore, though few D-Day objectives inland had been taken.
